PCS Pet Relocation Guide

Military pet shipping, from orders in hand to paws on the ground

A permanent change of station moves your household in weeks. It does not move your dog or cat on the same schedule. PCS pet relocation runs on the destination's import clock — rabies titers, microchip order of operations, USDA endorsement windows — and those deadlines are set months before your report-no-later-than date. Every year families reach the gate with orders, a flight and a pet that legally cannot board.

We are veteran-founded and we move pets for every branch, CONUS and OCONUS, on your timeline rather than ours. Each move is quoted two ways — airline live cargo and private climate-controlled ground — and we tell you which we would pick for that route and why. Every PCS move with orders gets a $300 military discount.

Military PCS pet shipping timeline

The schedule below is what we work backwards from once we see your report date. OCONUS stations with a rabies-titer requirement need the first step started six to seven months out, not ninety days.

  1. 1
As soon as orders drop (90+ days out)

Confirm the destination's import rules. CONUS moves need little more than a health certificate, but OCONUS stations change everything: Japan and South Korea run a 180-day rabies-titer waiting period, Hawaii's Direct Airport Release requires the titer plus a 30-day wait, and the UK and EU need an ISO microchip read before the rabies shot. Booking a flight before the clock starts is the single most common reason a PCS pet move slips.

  2. 2
    60 days out

Measure your pet and order the kennel. Airlines size cargo rates off the crate, not the animal, so the crate decides the price. Your pet also needs two to three weeks of crate acclimation before travel — sleeping in it at home, fed in it, doors open.

  3. 3
    30 days out

Lock the routing. Summer heat embargoes close many southern hubs from May through September, and snub-nosed breeds are refused outright by most carriers. We reserve the live-animal manifest space and, where air will not work, switch the leg to private climate-controlled ground.

  4. 4
    10 days out

Health certificate window opens. Most destinations accept a certificate issued within 10 days of travel; USDA APHIS endorsement is then required for international and Hawaii moves and is handled electronically in 24–72 hours.

  5. 5
    72 hours out

Final confirmations: flight numbers, tender time at the cargo facility, driver pickup window, and the paperwork packet zipped to the top of the crate. You get the itinerary in writing.

  6. 6
    Travel day

Pickup at your door, tender at cargo, load confirmation, and arrival confirmation. Ground moves get photo and text updates along the route.

Crate requirements for PCS pet travel

The kennel is the part of a PCS pet move families most often get wrong, and it is the part the airline checks first. IATA Live Animals Regulations set six rules; a crate that misses any one of them is refused at tender.

Length: nose to tail plus half a front leg

Interior length must be at least A + ½B, measured nose tip to tail base with your dog standing naturally. Round up to the next kennel size — airlines reject borderline fits at the counter.

Height: full standing clearance

Your pet must stand fully upright without the ears or the top of the head touching the roof. Erect-eared breeds are measured to the ear tips.

Width: twice the widest point

Interior width must be at least double the shoulder or hip width, so the animal can turn around and lie down naturally.

Hardware: metal bolts only

Plastic clips are refused. Kennels travel bolted with metal nuts and bolts on all sides, no wheels, with a metal-grille door latching at every point.

Ventilation on four sides for international

Domestic cargo accepts three-sided ventilation; nearly every international carrier requires all four sides, and some routes add a locking centre band.

Labels, bowls and bedding

Live Animal labels with directional arrows, feeding instructions, an absorbent leak-proof floor, and food and water bowls fixed to the inside of the door. All supplied with every booking.

Full measuring formula, the size 100–700 chart and breed examples are on the dog crate size guidelines page. Send us your measurements and we fit and supply the kennel for you.

What a PCS pet relocation costs

Private ground transport starts at $295 for short runs and is built from drive time, billable mileage, overnights and pet count. Airline live cargo is driven almost entirely by crate size and route: most domestic PCS moves land between $900 and $2,400, and OCONUS moves to Japan, Germany, the UK or Hawaii run higher once USDA endorsement, import permits and destination handling are added.

Under roughly 1,000 miles private ground is usually calmer and cheaper. Beyond that, air cuts total travel stress. Either way the estimate is itemized before anything is booked, and the $300 military discount is applied with a copy of your orders.
